How to Build and Fly an RC Plane

Hello everyone. As some of you probably know I am interested in building and flying RC planes. Or I was. It's been a few years, but I am starting to get back into the hobby, mostly because I want to take on some advanced projects that involve aerial videography and FPV flying.

My first scratchbuilt plane; crashed immediately after launch. (2008)

To get the ball rolling, one of my projects over the past couple weeks has been to develop a scratchbuilt trainer that I can use right away to get flying again, and also as a platform to do some experimentation on down the road.

4 years later my most recent build is significantly more flight worthy.

The plane turned out so well I put together a very detailed video tutorial about how to build one, and even a few general tips on how to fly it. In this blog entry, I'll be posting the video along with some detailed plans for the plane itself. I will also post a shopping list, and include some key details about locating and purchasing components. First; The Video.

As you can see, the video will give you a good general description of how to build the plane, however it might get a bit confusing with all the measurements. So, here are detailed plans of the plane that you can print out to refer to while you build it.
(Right-click and select 'save image as' or 'download linked file.' You should be able to print it once saved to your computer.)

You can build the plane from 1 sheet of home insulation foam, which is available from a store like Home Depot or Lowes very inexpensively. I used 1/2" foam for this, however you could probably make it from other sizes too. This foam is used for siding on houses being constructed, and I'm sure it comes in many varieties. The truth is, there is no specific right type of foam for this. Some varieties will be heavier, and some might be more durable, but in the end the plane really doesn't care. You could even make it from Walmart foamboard or just plain cardboard.

Next is the electronics. I always order my electronics from www.hobbyking.com, a cheap but popular hobby store with a good variety of parts and very slow shipping. Your local hobby store will also have everything you'll need for this, at a premium.

You will need a good brushless motor, rated for about 20 amps. Brushless motors are part and parcel of the electric rc world, as they are far superior to traditional brushed setups. These motors, combined with high capacity and lightweight lithium polymer batteries are really what enabled electric planes to become a realistic alternative to nitro gas aircraft. I recommend the brushless motor, speed controller, prop and prop saver in the links below for this trainer.

Brushless Motor
Speed Controller
Prop (Order Spares!!)
Prop Saver

To move the rudder and elevator of your plane, you will need 2 servos. You can buy very cheap ones, however I suggest you upgrade and get the metal geared ones below, as they last longer. You will also need control horns and servo pushrods. I have posted links for those as well, however you can make them easily out of wire and popsicle sticks if you want to save a few bucks.

Durable Metal Gear Servo
Alternative: Cheap Plastic Gear Servo
Control Horns
Push Rods

In terms of a radio, you have several options. I would suggest something like this if you are looking for your cheapest option, however if you plan to get heavily involved in the RC hobby, and want to be able to fly larger and more complex aircraft than this trainer, I would highly recommend you purchase a more advanced system. I use the Spektrum DX6i, but you might want to do some more research or possibly check local classifieds for a used system. You will also need a battery and charger. Check the links below for my recommendations. A smaller battery will give you a larger payload, while a larger batter will give you better flight times.

Small Battery for Higher Payload
Suggested Battery
Large Battery for Long Flights
Charger

Other items that are optional:

The RC hobby is exciting, expensive and potentially frustrating. With perseverance it is always ultimately rewarding. I hope this post has helped you build your first plane, successfully. Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or suggestions leave a comment!

  1. thank you so much,
do you recommended to me buy kit or build the one you built it?
    because i think it's complicated but i wanna ,

    1. I was able to fly this plane immediately after building it. I learnt to fly with a RTF Supercub, one of the best commercial trainers, but I can say this plane will be as good as anything you'll buy, plus you will learn about building your own plane as well!

      Good luck.

    2. Plz I am making a science project and have decided to choose this. I am from India and I am looking for cheapest options. So I just want to ask that any other Radio system(transmitter and receiver) will work or not and trick for a normal radio system which has only two options I.E On the left stick Up and down and on the right stick Right and left. Do plz help only 5 days left for submission and ALSO THAT SPEED CONTROLLER IS NECESSARY OR NOT.

      Delete
    3. Sorry if this is late, however rahul, it is highly recommended that you get that transmitter and reciever as it would make your airplane have much better control(6 channels is a lot) and is much easier to hook-up. Also, the speed controller is a must to control the brushless motor

  2. Excellent vid! Am building one (my first ever) as we speak-- I'm using a foam called Dow Tuff-R, which is pretty light. Do you recommend using a horizontal dowel to support the wing (28x14.5 plus 2 7-inch winglets, is that correct?)?

    Thanks for a great vid!

    1. Hi Earl,

Sorry for the late reply. Using a dowel is optional, but probably a good idea if the foam feels light/flimsy. Hope the build went well!

  7. Hello,
    I really enjoy your videos.
Questions, have you ever thought about adding Ailerons?
Looking at the build looks like it would be a excellent 4 channel trainer as well. Specially if you made two different wings.I was looking at your plans, the vertical stabilizer dimensions look confusing, it looks like 5 in high, but can not figure out the width.
Thanks, this will be my second home build.

  12. Hi Tim,
I have seen your video of making this plane. You come up with excellent design that requires less effort and easy to cut. Great to know that wing dihedral can be created that easily.
I have already purchased the pink foam and start building it, I have also ordered part from Hobbyking as well.
    Few things to think about:
    1. The fuselage width need to be around 3 inches so that wing can stuck well on the fuselage.
    2. Need to add tail wheel, please advise the part to order.

Like to know how it behaves if you cut short the height of the wing, does it fly fast?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, the width of the fuselage is important for mounting the wing, and instead of using a tail wheel, I simply put a popsicle stick on the tail in such a way that the wood rubs on the ground, preventing damage to the foam. You can easily add ailerons and if you want to make the plane go fast and fly aerobatic, shorten the wings slightly and make a KFm4 airfoil using some additional pieces of foam.

      Good Luck

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the reply. Can you please also let me know where you have bought the metal pieces that you used to make the tail elevator strong. I checked homedepot but wasn't able to find it.

a lot of stuff is out of stock at hobbyking, but is it good if you just pick this motor: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__32457__D2822_14_Brushless_Outrunner_1450kv_NL_Warehouse_.html?strSearch=brushless%20outrunner

And what is a good replacement for the also out of stock metal gear servo?

    Thanks!

    1. Hobby king is out of stock regularly, but any servo of similar size will work well, and you can also use plastic gear servos as a satisfactory replacement. Good luck!

    2. Tim,
I am finally able to fly the plane and it fly great, even super cub is jealous.
I made basic airfoil by gluing another piece of foam on the wing and sand it to make a nice curve. Also I put the wing on the fuselage at slight angle.
Thanks for such a nice video with detailed instructions. Now I know if I crash the plane, it will cost me only few bucks to rebuild it.

    1. Hi Amit,

Thanks for writing! You can use a more powerful motor, just make sure you get the centre of gravity right. I found that with the setup here and a KF Airfoil for the wing, I was able to smoothly carry a gopro. Check out these videos:

  18. I've constructed all the parts for the plane, but I still need to buy all the mechanical parts.

I live in Canada, and I am worried that the duty for all the parts from hobbyking will be very expensive. Does anyone know what the duty would be like? Or if any online stores in Canada offer around the same parts as suggested? Thanks.

To be honest, I've never been hit with more than 10-15$ in duties when buying from hobbyking. The values declared are sometimes questionably low - which helps.

    1. Tim mentions in his video it should be about an inch behind the wing tips. Mine is about 1 1/2" and it works fine. Hold it there. If it doesn't balance move battery(Heavy contents) until it balances.

    1. It is probably something to do with the "Center of gravity" Tim mentions this in his video. Maybe move the battery towards the back a little. Or perhaps the trim on the Rudder. Or the elevator trim. good luck.

      This post may help you.

I copied and pasted this text from the above post dated July 29,2013

      (Hi Amit,)

Thanks for writing! You can use a more powerful motor, just make sure you get the centre of gravity right. I found that with the setup here and a KF Airfoil for the wing, I was able to smoothly carry a gopro. Check out these videos:

    3. I made this one , mine one was little bit heavier than this one in above video . It got broken several times while flying , due to lack of controlling efforts .Controlling plane is also a skill . it needs time.If you already a flyer then go , why not ?

in case if you know how to control , you don't even need
ailerons , both rudder and elevator together movement is enough to have a movement like ailerons !!!!!

  116. Is it possible to build this plane out of wood?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can very well build planes out of wood. Balsa wood is the preferred choice as it is light as well as strong. The only thing you need to keep in mind are the thrust (produced by the props and motor) and the total weight of the plane. A good zone would be that the trust be atleast 60% of the weight (like for a 200gm plane thrust needs to be atleast 120gms, the more the better).

  128. Hi Tim,
I built this plane 1/2 size. It had lots of power but although you said the centre of gravity was about one inch behind the leading edge, you didn't say how far back from the planes front the wedding should sit. Mine took off, went vertical and I couldn't control it, hence a bad crash. I'd like to rebuild but need that crucial information. I would most appreciate a reply
